A tiny ritual. A useful difference.
Just add water.
Then get on with your day.
Our specially fired clay holds water and releases moisture gradually inside your closed sugar container.
Give it a soak.
Submerge your bear in clean water for about 20 minutes. Plain water is all it needs.
Pat it dry.
Blot away surface droplets with a clean towel. The moisture inside the clay does the work.
Tuck it in.
Place it with the brown sugar, close the lid, and re-soak when the sugar starts to firm up.
Clay, care & a clever little idea
A bear with
a practical story.
The original Brown Sugar Softener grew from Barbara's work with clay in Calgary, Alberta. Her idea gave a familiar kitchen frustration a small, reusable answer.
We keep that useful idea at the heart of these bears: straightforward preparation, specially fired clay, and a friendly shape you'll recognize every time you open the sugar jar.

Soak it in clean water for about 20 minutes, pat the surface dry, and place it with brown sugar in a tightly closed container. Remove the bear before measuring or mixing.
When should I soak it again?
Check the sugar as you use it. When it starts to harden, repeat the soak-and-blot routine. The interval depends on your container, climate, and how often you open it.
Can I wash it with soap?
Rinse with plain water. The porous clay can retain soap or fragrance, so keep it separate from your usual soapy dishes.
Should I choose one bear or two?
Start with one for one brown-sugar container. A pair is useful for separate light and dark sugar jars, or for sharing with another baker.
